Qualified Electrified Hardware Specialist Certification

Master the Integration of Electronic Access Control and Door Hardware

The Qualified Electrified Hardware Specialist (QEHS) Certification recognizes professionals who demonstrate the technical knowledge and applied skills to design, specify, and coordinate electrified hardware and access control systems in architectural openings. This credential represents a high level of expertise in balancing security, safety, and code compliance within today’s integrated building environments.

QEHS-certified professionals bridge the gap between traditional door hardware and electronic access systems, ensuring that every opening functions safely and reliably within complex building designs.

How to Earn the QEHS Certification

The QEHS Certification is earned through a structured training pathway followed by a comprehensive certification examination. Candidates complete a series of specialized DOIT courses that progressively build their knowledge of electrified hardware, system design, and compliance requirements.

Required Courses Prior to the QEHS Exam

  1. FN-01 Opening Industry Bootcamp
Establishes a foundational understanding of door, frame, and hardware components and terminology.

  2. FN-04 Electromechanical Hardware Fundamentals
Introduces the relationship between mechanical hardware and electronic components in door systems.

  3. FN-06 Access Control Fundamentals
Covers access control principles, credentialing, readers, controllers, and door interface devices.

  4. FO-08 Mastering Electromechanical Hardware Documentation (coming soon)
Provides in-depth instruction in power distribution, wire selection, and system layout for electrified openings.

  5. FO-09 Introduction to Integrator Codes and Standards (coming soon)
Focuses on life safety and building codes affecting electrified hardware and integrator coordination.

Upon completion of these courses, or equivalent training, candidates are eligible to take the Qualified Electrified Hardware Specialist (QEHS) Examination, which evaluates their understanding of electrified hardware integration, system design, code application, and cross-trade coordination.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the QEHS program, participants will gain practical and technical proficiency in:

  • Electrified hardware components and low-voltage system design

  • Power supply selection, load calculation, and wiring fundamentals

  • Integration of locks, readers, sensors, and automatic operators

  • Cross-trade coordination between hardware, access control, and electrical systems

  • Code application (NFPA, ADA, IBC) and field troubleshooting

  • Documentation, testing, and verification for commissioning

Why Earn Your QEHS Credential

  • Advanced Technical Expertise: Gain comprehensive knowledge of electrified openings and access control systems.

  • Career Advancement: Qualify for roles in specification, consulting, and system integration.

  • Industry Recognition: Distinguish yourself as a specialist bridging hardware and electronic access disciplines.

  • Accredited Learning: Earn your credential through DOIT—the only IACET-accredited training provider in the door and hardware industry.

  • Life Safety Focus: Ensure every electrified door system is compliant, reliable, and secure.
