Qualified Fire Door Inspector Training and Certification

(4-day program) Interested in becoming a fire door inspector? Come learn from qualified, certified, door opening industry experts who understand the total opening and are out there inspecting. Become familiar with the codes and standards affecting fire rated door opening assemblies. Acquire the skills to analyze fire rated openings and their components, research and evaluate products for compliance and create and submit required reporting to facility owners.

After successfully completing this training course, attendees will be able to:

Identify and utilize the codes affecting fire rated door opening assemblies.
Perform visual inspections and acceptance testing of swinging doors with builders hardware in accordance with the applicable codes and standards.
Detect the differences between allowable jobsite preparations and field modifications to determine if openings being inspected are code compliant.
Research and evaluate products for fire rated openings of different generations and classifications.
Create and submit inspection reports required by the codes for facilities to be kept for inspection by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Prescribe corrective products and processes to bring failing openings back into compliance.

Opening Industry Bootcamp

(3-day program) Bootcamp provides the foundation on which all other industry learning is based. Students will learn the fundamentals of the door, frame, and hardware industry with an emphasis on industry products, their function, application, use and purpose. Students will also learn to read and interpret plans and specifications so they know what products must be provided.

After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Identify opening industry products and processes.
Classify products, including rated products, used in the door opening industry.
Distinguish between the three product levels to apply appropriate materials to openings.
Interpret construction specifications to provide materials needed on a project.

Automated end of class exams are delivered via DOITs Learning Management System at the end of the course, students must achieve a minimum 80%.

To earn a course completion certificate, attendees are required to fully participate in the training activities, lectures, and discussion, and pass the end of class exam. Participation is defined as greater than 90% attendance of the scheduled course time and active engagement verified by the instructor.

(3-day program) Nearly every project today has some type of electromechanical hardware, whether simple or complex, it is all based on some fundamental principles. This hands-on course will teach students the basics of circuitry and wiring, reading and drawing wiring diagrams and will bring them through operational based projects where they can hook-up and troubleshoot common hardware applications.

After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Recognize basic electronic terminology and components of low voltage circuits.
Illustrate products required for a complete electrified opening.
Sketch out different types of electrified opening drawings.
Design, wire and troubleshoot electrified hardware circuits of varied levels.

This course will bring students through scenario-based exercises that will teach them to navigate and apply, building, fire, life safety and accessibility codes. This course covers: NFPA 80 – Standards for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 105 – Standard for Smoke Doors Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code, ICC A117.1 – Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities and IBC – International Building Code.

After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:
Identify the correct code for application on projects.
Locate and navigate required codes and standards affecting door openings.
Interpret and apply the mandated code requirements.
Propose and prescribe the appropriate materials to comply with adopted code.

(2-day program) As security concerns continue to heighten, many facilities are incorporating electronic access control into their physical access control systems. While mechanical keys will continue to be used for years to come, the convenience and often increased security provided by an access control system has become the norm on most of today’s projects. From small, simple, one door systems to complex systems handling thousands of doors and users, access control is based on some fundamental principles. This hands-on course will teach students the basics of access control systems, including the evolution of reader and card technologies, basic software, data collection, access levels, and time zones.

After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Recognize and understand basic access control systems in order to provide the correct product solution for the application.
Incorporate electromechanical hardware products, like electrified locksets, electrified panic and fire exit hardware, and automatic operators, into a system.

Their qualifications include:

1. Accurate Detailing and Estimation: Capable of accurately detailing and estimating costs for moderately complex projects, such as office buildings, medical clinics, or schools.

2. Basic Project Management Proficiency: Able to set up project management plans outlining tasks, duration, and deadlines to align with the General Contractor's schedule, ensuring smooth project execution.

3. Fundamental Code and Application Understanding: Demonstrates a foundational understanding of fire safety, life safety, accessibility, and building codes pertaining to door openings, enabling identification and resolution of basic code errors and application issues.

4. Effective Meeting Facilitation and Documentation: Competent in conducting keying meetings and documenting outcomes accurately, ensuring clear communication and alignment amongst stakeholders regarding keying requirements.
